Textured Art: Acrylic Painting Meets Fabric & Thread

Unlock the world of mixed media with “Textured Art: Acrylic Painting Meets Fabric & Thread.” In this hands-on class, you’ll explore how to combine acrylic paint with bits of fabric to create your composition which will then be unified with quilting to create unique, dimensional works of art. Learn how to incorporate fabrics visual textures, stitching, and other textile techniques into your acrylic paintings for a truly personalized touch. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced artist, this class will guide you in experimenting with materials, discovering new ways to add depth, and enhancing your artistic expression. Bring your creativity to life with every brushstroke, stitch, and layer! And we will be doing many layers. No painting experience is needed as Katie will work with you and take you on guided painting exercises to build your confidence as you lead up to a larger fully realized piece of art.

Mad About Motif

Pick a handful of strong motifs — from light and airy to big and bold – and use them to create spectacular printed fabric. Combine motifs to create whole cloth prints, or overall prints, or some to cut later and use in fiber work. You will use your graphic motif in several applications from linear form, to monoprint, to screened image. The class will rely on value as well as color to pull prints that relate, and graphics that will unite pieces for a strong set of pieces. Knowledge of dye processes helpful but not critical.

Tea Bag Revival

The lowly tea bag, when dried and emptied, becomes the foundation for a precious piece of art. Each tea bag will be enhanced with collage using hand–painted papers and fabrics. The addition of free-motion machine sewing and hand stitching will unify your collection of tiny tea bags, and when combined, will become a wondrous art quilt.

Realistic or abstract shapes, cut from these materials, are collaged and stitched onto the tea bags. A final composition will be created on a fabric substrate combined with variety of textured fabrics and trims. Kits including prepared tea bags, hand-painted papers, background fabrics and additional materials are available.)
